Northumberland Street

Northumberland Street was totally pedestrianized in 1998 and today it's hard to believe that at one time, it had to carry traffic as part of the busy A1 trunk-road.

In the 1937 picture, the bunting is to mark the coronation of King George VI. The photograph shows how inadequate the pavements were on this bustling shopping street.

In both shots, you can see the Amos Atkinson shoe shop, flanked by larger buildings on each side. Currently, this is a branch of Moss Bros.
